Mrs. Kansas International®

Melanie Hansel

After fifteen years of marriage and six children, I have returned to school and completed my prerequisites for Pharmacy school.  In addition to going to school full time I tutor students with disabilities at Wichita State University. This year, I was offered a part time position at my children’s elementary as the Parent Volunteer Coordinator.  I have been a PTA and PTO president and have held board positions at all of my children’s schools.

I have seen parent involvement on all levels and the impact that it has on children.  I have chosen “Parent Involvement in Their Children’s Education” as my platform.  Sometimes we get preoccupied with daily routines and trials that we over look the little things like: asking how their day was at school, taking an interest in their homework, or being involved in school activities.  Studies show that children with parents who are involved in their education have a higher success rate.

Aside from school volunteering, tutoring, and mentoring, I also contribute to the community by serving in the Scouting program, participating in Board of Education meetings and committee meetings on the city’s chronic homeless problem. Recently, I was appointed to chair an event at our city’s annual Riverfestival celebration.

As Mrs. Kansas International 2008, I hope to bring awareness to parents about the importance of involvement at all levels and to show support for our city and state in their efforts to enhance the lives of children and families.
